Shipra cracks Nanyang Business School after being waitlisted

With 6 years of work experience as a chartered accountant, Shipra wanted to move into Investing. For that, she chose the Best MBA program and started her application process with us.

After working hard on her applications, she was able to crack Nanyang Business School.

Shipra’s goals story

Shipra’s goals story had her goals of working in the investment function but was missing the story of why. She needed to mention her past with relevant details of how her professional experience as a chartered accountant had exposed her to the importance of investment in an organizational structure.

She was supposed to find alumni from her target schools that were now working with her target employers in her target functions and understand their career trajectory to get an idea of what her short-term goal would look like, and what roles and responsibilities she would undertaking in that role.

She needed to portray her conviction for switching from Accounting to Investment through an AHA moment, and then reveal the current handicaps she came across that convinced her that an MBA was the bridge between her present and future aspirations.

The handicaps would be the skills or knowledge that she was missing to immediately enter the job function of your choice. Whereas the AHA moments would be the events that inspired her to enter the said job function.

Shipra’s essay analysis

Shipra’s focus in the essays was very general. It seemed like she wanted to write about all her experiences and mention every accomplishment in her essays. While mentioning your accomplishments in the resume, in a points format, is a good idea, detailing them in the essays is not.

For the essays, a tip for prospective applicants is to stick to a few unique things about yourself. Needless to say, the few essays that business schools have, come with word limits. This curbs the incidents that an applicant can share with the admissions committee.

Thus, using the space for the essays to share impressive, unique, and integral parts of your personal and professional life is the way to go.

Waitlist strategy

Before being accepted to Nanyang, Shipra got waitlisted from a business school. although it dampened her spirits, she agreed to working on a waitlist-strategy while interviewing for other schools as well.

The waitlist strategy was two-part.

  1. The first step was to get a fresh letter of recommendation.
  2. Carry on networking with the current students and alumni of his target school.

With the waitlist taken care of, she could now focus on all of her other interviews. Which she did great at.

We were very proud to learn that Shipra got an acceptance letter from Nanyang Business School.
