What does the McCombs admissions committee look for?

    1. Answer the question

Year after year, the McCombs admissions committee has found it necessary to mention that the applicants need to answer the questions presented to them during the essays or the interviews.

The McCombs interviewers have faced this issue more than the admissions committee member reading the essays. Members of the admissions committee suggest that applicants take a minute to collect their thoughts rather than feeling the need to blurt out an answer as soon as the question ends.

They say that applicants have previously spoken for 10 minutes and ended up asking what the original question was. It is one of the biggest pet-peeves of the McCombs admissions committee as they mention it in various interviews over the years.

They suggest having a close friend or family member read your essays without reading the essay prompt. This will help you figure out if your message is getting across concisely.

    1. Have questions

During the interview, the McCombs admissions committee suggests showing up with a list of good questions.

Don’t make this list for the sake of making it.

Your research into the school, networking activities, and the journey to the interview should be reflective in your list of questions. It should represent an applicant who knows the school well and wants to know exactly what their future as an MBA student at McCombs would look like.

The admissions committee at McCombs suggests having 2-3 good questions with a few backups.

  1. Don’t stalk the school

Most schools appreciate the effort that a waitlisted MBA applicant puts into reaching out to the school to improve their profile and shortlisting. However, the McCombs admissions committee suggests this can sometimes be overbearing to certain schools including McCombs.

They say that the point of being waitlisted is to wait. Taking this suggestion seriously, the best plan of action for a waitlisted applicant would be to reach out to the admissions committee once and then follow instructions rather than badgering them with questions.
