Building MBA

How to get an MBA admit at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School?

Named after Sir Paul Judge, a founding benefactor, Cambridge Judge Business School is the business school of the prestigious Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. The school consistently ranks amongst the top schools in the world and currently holds the 19th spot as per the Financial Times Business Schools Ranking.

Along with other graduate programs in Business, Finance and Management, Cambridge provides a full-time MBA and an Executive MBA option. The school shares that the mission of their flagship MBA program is to create innovators, world shapers and groundbreakers.

The full-time MBA program is a 12-month program where over 200 MBA students come together to create a collaborative community.

“Our programme is carefully designed to deliver rigour and flexibility, for our diverse cohorts to build foundations, but also explore interests and new directions,” says Michael Kitson, Director of the Cambridge MBA.

Cambridge Cost of Attendance 2021

MBA applicants accepted to the Cambridge Judge Business School for the MBA session of 2021-22 are required to pay £59,000 tuition.

As far as the living expenses at Cambridge Judge Business School are considered, the school asks students to show funds to cover their accommodation and living expenses for the duration of September to June. These expenses range from £14,000 to £14,500.

The accommodation and living expenses don’t cover the summer term from July to August. Students planning to stay in Cambridge during that term are required to add expenses as necessary.

A few other expenses that can add up and increase the cost of attendance for a Cambridge MBA student are:

  1. Set-up costs like buying electronics, e.g. laptop, UK mobile phone etc.
  2. Travel costs to and from Cambridge.
  3. Any bills that add up in case the student opts for private accommodation.

What does the Cambridge admissions committee look for?

Start Networking as early as possible

While networking as much as you can is a great step for admission to any top schools, applicants to Cambridge Judge need to be even more involved in the process.

Pre-COVID-19, the school held a formal dinner with interviewing candidates to introduce them and get them started with creating their own Cambridge network. This dinner was held the evening before the scheduled interviews and was followed up by the interviews and a post-interview discussion with the career consultants at the school.

This, in a way, shows us how important pre-MBA networking is to Cambridge. Taking this hint, make sure you connect to as many Cambridge alumni, faculty, and current students as possible.

Have International Experience

European business schools, in general, place a stronger focus on students having international experience. Cambridge follows suit and mentions international experience as one of the most important and persuasive things in an applicant’s MBA profile.

However, if you don’t have international experience, you Cambridge dreams aren’t over yet.

The reason Cambridge asks for international experience is to evaluate if the student has a global mindset. A global mindset is the ability to perceive and break down the actions and reaction of people despite a cultural barrier. It helps create leaders that can effectively lead a diverse group.

Any experience from your past which shows you successfully dealing with an intellectual or emotional hurdle despite a cultural difference can help you show a global mindset thus helping you deal with a lack of international experience.

A strong learning curve

The Cambridge MBA is a rigorous one-year MBA program. The short duration of 12 months means a student needs to be on their A-game since orientation day.

In the short span of 12 months, every student is expected to complete three rigorous team projects and one optional individual project. Two of the three required team projects involve student teams dealing with real clients and providing solutions to real businesses.

With multiple electives, super specific to the industry or sector, students do not get the opportunity to change their post-MBA plans later into the program.

Adding in the extra-curricular, social, and networking events, a Cambridge MBA student needs to have a strong learning curve to perform well in the MBA classroom and optimize their time at Cambridge by being an active part of the community.
